Ever since Madonna first started her career in ’79, she has dated and been linked to a number of celebrities–from Dennis Rodman and John F. Kennedy, Jr. to Basquiat. But in a new interview with Howard Stern, Madonna shed some light on what it was like dating the late Tupac Shakur during the ’90s. She claimed that he made her look at the world in a different way–the kind of way that allegedly makes a pop star all angry and defiant.
‘Pac’s name entered the conversation when Stern asked Madonna why she appeared to have issues with talk show host David Letterman after appearing on his show more than once over the years with an attitude. One specific time, she even sat down on his couch and cursed her way through their interview after giving him a pair of her panties. She blamed her attitude at that time on the late rapper:
Stern: “Madonna, do you like [David] Letterman?”
Madonna: “I mean, yeah. I do.”
Stern: “I watched some of those old interviews, and I can’t tell if you like him or if you’re just kind of annoyed.”
Madonna: “No, that’s just how I flirt with people.”
Stern: “Is that the flirt?”
Stern: “Oh. It seemed contentious and uncomfortable.”
Madonna: “One time I was mad at him when I said the f-word a lot, but the rest of the time was good. No, you know what? I don’t know–I was in a weird mood that day. I was dating Tupac Shakur at the time and the thing is, he got me all riled up about life in general so when I went on the show I was feeling very gangsta.”
Stern: “I didn’t know you dated Tupac Shakur! That’s shocking to me. That’s never been out there I don’t think.”
For some, including Stern and co-host Robin Quivers, this tea was a shocker, but for many others, it was a rumor that had been heard and confirmed a while back. ‘Pac’s good friend, actress Rosie Perez, stated that he asked her to hook him up with Madonna, and they hooked up all right.
And in a past interview with MTV’s Tabitha Soren, ‘Pac spoke on Madonna, who was supposed to visit him while he was in prison for nine months at Clinton Correctional Facility, but canceled after the media went bananas over her planned trip. During that chat, he referred to her as a friend.
“She’s a good person. She helped me a lot. She was real cool, like any one of my homeboys.”
Madonna also spoke on her relationship with the late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in her interview with Stern. Of course, they dated as he was blowing up and she was getting used to life in NYC. She claimed that his heroin addiction tore them apart, and when she broke up with him he even made her return all the paintings he gave her as gifts.
“We always think we can fix people and we can’t…just change yourself.
I loved him. When I broke up with him he made me give them all back to him, and then he painted over all of them black.”
Madonna has definitely had quite the storied love life–and life in general.
